Black in the world of Argentine boxing: former middleweight champion Jorge Castro, nicknamed “El Roña,” has died at the age of 59. The former boxer, according to a report in the newspaper La Nación, collapsed while in a bingo hall with one of his daughters, Quimey, and his ex-partner.
In 1989, he won the Argentine middleweight title, and the following year he secured the South American championship. His confirmation on the international stage came on August 12, 1994, when he defeated American Reggie Johnson in San Miguel de Tucumán to win the WBA middleweight world title.
One of his most famous fights took place on December 10, 1994, when he faced American John David Jackson in the Mexican city of Monterrey. Castro was at a disadvantage, but managed to land a left hook, knocking his opponent to the mat. This allowed him to turn the tide of the fight and secure the victory. After retiring from boxing, he also engaged in social activities, managing soup kitchens and community centers in the Buenos Aires area, where he helped the most needy people.
