Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.

Students who protested this Tuesday in front of the Ministry of Education were confronted with violence by special forces as they broke down the doors of the ministry building and the railings on Durrës Street. The rally began tensely with chants of "We want conditions, we want knowledge, not government tales", "When the youth wakes up, the government falls" and "Rama, resign".

Protesters gathered at around 2:00 PM on Durrës Street, in front of the ministry building, where numerous police forces were stationed. The situation became tense when some of the young people threw eggs, water bottles, toilet paper, stones and capsules towards the institution. The facade of the ministry was written with the words “Minister of Crime”.

But the moment the ministry's entrance door was opened and the protective railings were removed, special police forces who were waiting intervened harshly, using rubber batons and pressurized water against the protesters.

The organizers had called for participation from all cities in Albania, with the aim of uniting students and citizens in a broader response.

At the height of the Trump administration's clash with the International Criminal Court, the Albanian government has quietly abrogated the agreement that protected American servicemen from extradition to The Hague. But an unusual maneuver with the publication of the law in the Official Gazette raises suspicions that Edi Rama is trying to please Brussels without angering Washington.
