Hail hit some of the agricultural areas of Korça, causing significant damage to the areas planted with vegetables. The losses for farmers, just a few weeks before the start of the harvest season, are huge. In the villages of Lumalas, Biranj, Melçan and Vashmi, the hail mainly hit plots with peppers and spinach. According to farmers, in some of the areas the damage reaches up to 60% of the production. But the consequences are not limited to peppers and spinach. Other agricultural crops have also been damaged, increasing the bill of losses for farmers in the Korça Plain.
The damaged products are being sold with difficulty and in some cases below cost, while some vegetables are rotting in the fields, as they cannot find a market. Farmers in the southeast are increasingly facing the consequences of climate change and extreme weather phenomena, which are directly affecting agricultural production and their incomes. The situation is increasing the need for greater protective measures and for agriculture to adapt to increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.
