For the public, Chandler Bing and Monica Geller's wedding on the hit sitcom "Friends" was one of the most beautiful moments of their love story. But for Matthew Perry's family, that scene had a much more painful meaning.
The actor's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, has confessed that behind this happy moment on screen was the fear that Matthew might never experience such a day himself in real life.
"When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he wanted this in his life. He wanted a partner and children," she said in an interview with People magazine.
Mia explained that the family was aware of the seriousness of the actor's addiction problems, so the happiness that his character conveyed in the series was also accompanied by uncertainty and pain.
"We all knew how serious his problem was, so there was this feeling: who knows what will happen?" she confessed.
A dream that Matthew Perry failed to realize
Matthew Perry, who became famous worldwide for his role as Chandler Bing, never married and had no children during his lifetime. The actor passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.
In his autobiographical book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, published in 2022, Perry spoke openly about his long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.
He also revealed that, shortly after filming of Chandler and Monica's wedding episode ended, he was sent back to a rehab center.
The episode, which aired in 2001, marked a significant moment in the history of "Friends," but the actor's memoirs reveal that the filming period was fraught with personal difficulties.
New documentary will reveal the unknown side of the actor
His sister's story will be part of Netflix's new documentary, "The One About Matthew Perry," which is expected to be released on October 27, 2026.
The three-part production will feature testimonies from people who knew the actor closely and will address his career, personal life and battle with addiction.
