France24: Dua Lipa supports protests in Albania

International media outlet France 24 has also paid attention to the support that world-famous singer Dua Lipa has given to the protests in Albania against the Rama government and the luxury resort project in Zvërnec.

In an article published this Tuesday, French media wrote that the artist called the protest movement "inspiring" and expressed concern about the removal of environmental protections without public consultation.

British singer Dua Lipa said in a podcast published on Tuesday that the protest movement in Albania is "inspiring," as protests against a resort linked to US President Donald Trump's family continue to put pressure on the government in Tirana.

Since late May, protests have been taking place in Albania against the construction of a luxury hotel linked to Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, within a protected natural area on the Albanian coast.

Speaking on her Service95 Book Club podcast, in a conversation with Albanian writer Lea Ypi, Dua Lipa said she shares the protesters' concerns about the government's lack of transparency in approving the project.

"What worries me is the principle that the government can change the law to remove environmental protections without any kind of public consultation," said the 30-year-old artist, whose parents are Albanian from Kosovo.

"It's inspiring to see how much people care," she said, referring to the daily protests.

The singer also added that the problem is clearly structural and that there is a need to rebuild the system "in a way that supports people."

The project for the resort was initially presented in 2024, but the latest wave of protests began after barbed wire fences were placed on the beach and bulldozers entered at the end of May.

Opposition to the project has become a symbol of dissatisfaction with perceived corruption, while protesters are now also demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Dua Lipa's comments were welcomed by environmental activist Besjana Gurri, who told AFP that they constitute "a powerful message" to the Albanian government.

"I am convinced that her voice will help this cause receive more international attention and will strengthen the voice of the citizens who are protesting in Tirana," said Gurri.

German media: Protests in Albania, not just anger about the environment

For weeks, thousands of people have taken to the streets every day in Albania. What began as resistance to a construction project in a protected coastal area has turned into a broader movement. It is no longer just about a planned luxury resort, but about the question of who owns Albania’s coastline and who benefits from the country’s economic boom.

Andi Bushati: The collapse of Vučić, an instruction manual for us in Tirana

Serbia is a typical example of showing that these types of powers cannot be defeated by normal means, that the method to combat them is not to chase after elections, like a bull after a red rag, but to destroy, weaken, delegitimize and subjugate them, through methods that are mostly considered illegal or violent by the ruling class.
