Rama sides with Germany: Russian drone with explosives, act of aggression

Prime Minister Edi Rama has made a statement in support of Germany after the Berlin government announced that it blamed Russia for the drone with explosives at Leipzig airport.

"A drone carrying explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport is not a gray area. It is an act of Russian aggression against Germany and against the security of Europe, as the German government itself is now making clear."

"Full solidarity with my friend Friedrich Merz, the German Government and the German people. The Chancellor is right to respond with clarity and strength. Hybrid warfare cannot be rewarded with hesitation. Albania stands firmly with Germany, Ukraine and all our allies in NATO. We are stronger when we act as one," Rama wrote on X.

The German government stated this Tuesday that Russia was "responsible" for an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4.

"The federal government concludes that Russia is responsible for the hybrid attack in Leipzig," Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said during a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday afternoon. He added that the attack fits the pattern of a "long series of destabilizing operations" against Europe.

Authorities discovered a drone equipped with explosives and a detonation mechanism in the security area of Leipzig/Halle airport on the evening of August 4, among Ukrainian cargo planes. Investigators also believe that a second drone may have collided with a DHL plane nearby.

Last week, German media reported that a third drone, also loaded with explosives, had been discovered at the airport. German federal prosecutors described the incident as a "serious attack on German transport and logistics infrastructure."

Over the weekend, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz promised that an official response to the incident would be made public in the coming days. He did not provide further details, but said Germany's allies in the European Union and NATO "would not be surprised."

Earlier on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul promised a measured response to the drone discovery, but avoided directly blaming Russia until a joint press conference with Interior Minister Dobrindt.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said earlier on Tuesday that it was "clear" that Russia was involved in the drone incident, but declined to comment further until Germany officially identified the people it believes are responsible.

Kallas said Russia is becoming increasingly provocative, raising the question of what can be done to prevent Moscow from further escalating tensions. ©LAPSI.al

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
