Thousands of students from the University of Tirana and other higher education institutions took to the streets of the Albanian capital, Tirana, today to express their deep dissatisfaction with the quality of the education system and the chronic lack of employment opportunities after graduation. The protest, which began peacefully, quickly turned into scenes of violence and clashes with police forces near government buildings.

The students, who carried banners with slogans such as "Quality Education, No Diploma in the Drawer!" and "We Seek Jobs, No Emigration!" , marched towards the Ministry of Education. They emphasized the need for fundamental reforms in university curricula, increased investment in educational infrastructure, and the creation of a more favorable environment for the integration of young people into the labor market.

Tensions rose sharply when a group of students attempted to break through the police cordon, set up to protect government institutions. The police responded immediately, using rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd. In turn, the students threw various objects at the security forces. Eyewitnesses reported several injuries on both sides, as well as numerous arrests.

One of the protest spokespersons, who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, declared that "this protest is our last call to the government. We will not remain silent any longer. Our future is being jeopardized and we will not accept being a lost generation." The government, through a statement from its spokesperson, called for calm and dialogue, condemning acts of violence and emphasizing that "the government's doors are always open for discussion, but violence is not the solution."

The Albanian student protests come at a time when the country is facing major economic and social challenges, including high youth unemployment and a continuing wave of emigration. It remains to be seen whether these clashes will prompt reflection and concrete action by the authorities, or will further deepen the gap between citizens and the government.

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
