DER STANDARD: Police used disproportionate violence! Youth believe they are

By Adelheid Woelfl, DER STANDARD

According to the Ministry of Health, 31 people were injured during the protests in Tirana on Sunday and were taken to the Trauma Center at the “Mother Teresa” Hospital. Among them were 21 police officers, five demonstrators, four bystanders who were not involved in the protests, and one media representative. On Sunday, violent clashes broke out again in Tirana between demonstrators and police.

Protesters threw rocks, while police used tear gas and water cannons. After 135 days of peaceful protests, demonstrations for the rule of law and against corruption turned violent for the first time on Tuesday of last week.

On Monday, demonstrators gathered again in front of the Ministry of Education. Police set up a security cordon, after protesters had damaged and burned public buildings, including the ministry, in the previous days. Unlike previous days, the protest began with singing and dancing.

"The boundaries have been crossed"

Prime Minister Edi Rama and Interior Minister Ervin Demo met with police officers. Demo condemned the attack on Police Station No. 3 on Sunday. According to the minister, this attack crossed all tolerable limits. He stated that police officers suffered serious injuries during the attack, including burns.

The minister said the escalation of violence showed that the protests had lost their initial character and could no longer be considered student protests. Over the past few days, demonstrators had also damaged and looted kiosks and shops. Garbage bins were engulfed in flames and cobblestones were everywhere.

According to reports, the police had in some cases used disproportionate force against the demonstrators. Some of them were beaten even though they were already helpless on the ground.

Months of protests

Protests in Tirana have been taking place since late May. The “Flamingo Revolution” is demanding the repeal of laws that allow the construction of tourist resorts for the super-rich in a protected natural area on the coast. Students are also demanding better conditions at universities and more affordable dormitories.

The government of Edi Rama, who is ruling in an increasingly authoritarian manner, has failed to respond to the demands of the demonstrators in recent months. Instead, it has claimed that the protesters are led from abroad or that they are protecting Hamas. These slanderous accusations have further angered the young people.

According to him, these activities require an independent investigation, especially in cases where diplomatic or political influence may be intertwined with private business interests.

He says that international investments are welcome, as long as they create real opportunities, respect the environment, implement applicable laws, and bring benefits to the Albanian people.

"What we firmly reject, however, is the idea that the future of our country, our protected landscapes and our national resources can be decided behind closed doors, without real public participation. Albania is not a luxury resort just waiting to be developed," he comments on the projects.

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
