US Congressman Ritchie Torres has condemned the violence used by Albanian police against student protests over the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. In a post on X, he calls for the respect of the right to peaceful protest. The US lawmaker writes that Albanian citizens have the right to protest peacefully, while the police have the obligation to respect this right and guarantee the implementation of the law.
Torres calls for a reduction in tensions and calming the situation, expressing concern about the escalation of violence.
"I am deeply concerned by the outbreak of violence against protesters in Albania. The actions taken by the Albanian police are unacceptable and must end. Albanians have the right to protest peacefully; the police must respect the right of protesters to protest and must uphold the rule of law. The situation must calm down to end the alarming violence," Ritchie Torres said in a statement.
