Misha Glenny writes in “The Guardian”: How students threaten the “strongman” Vučić

History may not be about to repeat itself in Serbia, but it is beginning to rhyme. A little over a quarter of a century ago, Serbian citizens turned out to vote in large numbers to inflict a historic defeat on the then strongman in Belgrade, Slobodan Milosevic, who was seeking re-election as president. He lost despite his extensive control over the media, the judiciary and the security forces. When he balked at leaving office, Serbs took to the streets by the hundreds of thousands, ultimately forcing him out.

On Sunday, a new generation could have the deciding vote in an equally fateful election, this time for the country's parliament. The current strongman, Aleksandar Vučić, recently resigned as president to fight an election aimed at shifting the locus of power from the presidency to the office of prime minister.

But Vučić, who has been in almost complete control of Serbia for 14 years, finds himself in the background for the first time since he took power, as happened to Milošević in 2000. Like his close friend, Viktor Orbán, who was soundly defeated in earlier elections this year, Vučić has felt compelled to do everything he can to stop the opposition electoral coalition, known as the Student List (SL).

Unlike Orbán's Fidesz party, Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is unlikely to be humiliated in Sunday's vote. Polls vary widely. Some give the SL a lead of almost 10 percentage points. Others suggest the race is close. Polls also suggest that the higher the turnout, the better the chances for the opposition. Some fear the consequences could even be violent.

Vučić is damaging the campaign to skew the outcome in his favor. He has tightened his grip on the media by supporting a change in ownership of what was until recently the most important independent news group, United Media. Last weekend, 10 prominent journalists from his most important outlet, the N1 television station, resigned in protest against editorial appointments believed to favor Vučić and the SNS.

If, despite everything, the Student List emerges victorious in the elections, the shockwaves will be felt as strongly across Europe as they were when Orbán was defeated.

Above all, it opens the possibility of faster integration into the European Union, a move that would be welcomed not only in Brussels but also in London. Successive British governments have been concerned that the Balkans represent a weakness in European defense, where Russia could exert considerable pressure. Since Brexit, Britain’s influence there has been politically limited, but it has been active in promoting security cooperation across the region, with NATO and the EU.

Student activists and their supporters are frustrated by the EU's apparent indifference to their political struggle and a general perception in the outside world that Serbia's democracy is a lost cause. On Sunday, they aim to prove them wrong.

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
