Brussels responds to Moscow: The future of the Western Balkans lies in the Union

The European Union (EU) has a response to Russian warnings about the Western Balkan countries: their future is in the EU.

This is the message that Brussels is conveying after the statement of the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova. In the middle of this month, she had "warned" the countries of the region that European integration is no longer just a matter of membership, but also implies acceptance of Brussels' policy towards Moscow, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Asked how it could protect countries aiming for membership from the consequences of Russian warnings, the European Commission said that "the fight against foreign information manipulation, disinformation and other hybrid threats is an integral part of the membership process."

"Protecting the European integration process and the integrity of the media from disinformation and manipulation of information from abroad is of essential importance," the European Commission's response to Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL) states.

While Brussels emphasizes that the European Union is the main political, economic and strategic partner of the Western Balkans, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's interlocutors assess that Moscow is increasingly presenting European integration as a choice between rapprochement with the EU and maintaining relations with Russia.

Harmonization of policies of countries in the region with the EU

Messages from Moscow are nothing new for the Western Balkan countries that are progressing towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Russian officials have been criticizing NATO and European Union expansion into the Western Balkans for years.

The latest clash followed Podgorica's decision to lift the visa-free regime for Russian citizens from November, a decision that the Russian Embassy in Montenegro described as a "hostile act."

Authorities in Podgorica say that membership in the European Union remains the strategic goal of the country's foreign policy and that Montenegro will continue full harmonisation with the EU's common foreign and security policy.

"Official Moscow's positions on Montenegro's membership in NATO, as well as its future membership in the European Union, are well-known and do not constitute a novelty in our bilateral relations. However, they do not determine our strategic decisions, which we make independently, in accordance with national interests and the will of our citizens," the Montenegrin Foreign Ministry told REL.

Mesazhi i Moskës, drejtuar “kryesisht” Serbisë

Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia are fully aligned with the European Union's common foreign and security policy and are members of NATO.

Kosovo, which does not have the status of a candidate country for EU membership, also follows the European Union's foreign policy positions, including the sanctions imposed on Russia.

Russia has no bilateral relations with Kosovo, while Pristina considers Moscow one of Serbia's main supporters in foreign policy.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russian influence is mainly linked to political support for the authorities of Republika Srpska and close cooperation with Milorad Dodik. His party blocks the implementation of sanctions against Russia, as well as the introduction of visas for Russian citizens.

Serbia remains Russia's closest political partner in the region.

Despite its status as a candidate country for membership in the European Union, Belgrade has not imposed sanctions on Moscow since the start of the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, Serbia continues to be largely dependent on Russian gas, while efforts are underway to resolve the ownership issue of the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), between the Russian company Gazprom Neft and the Hungarian company MOL.

Energy dependence on Russia is currently most pronounced in Serbia, while other countries in the region have, in recent years, intensified efforts to diversify gas supply sources and reduce dependence on Russian energy.

However, the European Union remains by far the largest trading partner of all countries in the region, including Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. /Taken from Radio Free Europe

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
