Ambassador Jan Braathu, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, has reacted to the incidents that occurred during the student protest and reports of violence against journalists and media workers.
Braathu emphasizes that media freedom and the public's right to information are essential for the functioning of a democratic society.
It also calls on the Albanian authorities to promptly and effectively investigate all reported incidents, including allegations of excessive or disproportionate use of force by the police.
Full statement:
The ongoing reports of violence against journalists and media workers, as well as their obstruction while reporting on the protests taking place in Albania, are concerning.
Freedom of the media and the public's right to information are essential for the functioning of a democratic society. Guaranteeing the safety of journalists is essential for the protection of these principles, including during public demonstrations, where journalists must be able to report freely, safely and without unjustified interference.
These principles are reflected in OSCE Ministerial Council Decision No. 3/18 on the Safety of Journalists, which reaffirms the commitments of participating States to protect journalists and ensure accountability for attacks on them.
I call on the Albanian authorities to promptly and effectively investigate all reported incidents, including allegations of excessive or disproportionate use of force by the police.
Equally important is the prevention of further incidents. To this end, I encourage law enforcement authorities to fully implement the existing State Police Guidelines for the Safety of Journalists, ensuring that police officers facilitate safe and unhindered reporting during public gatherings.
