OSCE reacts to violence against journalists during protests: Do not obstruct the

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Jan Braathu has issued a statement following numerous reports of journalists being assaulted or obstructed in their work during the protests in Albania.

"Continued reports of violence against journalists and media workers, as well as their obstruction while reporting on the protests taking place in Albania, are concerning.

Freedom of the media and the public's right to information are essential for the functioning of a democratic society. Guaranteeing the safety of journalists is essential for respecting these principles, including during public demonstrations, where journalists must be able to report freely, safely and without unjustified interference.

These principles are reflected in OSCE Ministerial Council Decision No. 3/18 on the Safety of Journalists, which reaffirms the commitments of participating States to protect journalists and ensure accountability for attacks on them.

I call on the Albanian authorities to promptly and effectively investigate all reported incidents, including allegations of excessive or disproportionate use of force by the police.

Equally important is the prevention of further incidents. To this end, I encourage law enforcement authorities to fully implement the existing State Police Guidelines for the Safety of Journalists, ensuring that police officers facilitate safe and unhindered reporting during public gatherings,” the statement reads. ©LAPSI.al

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
