Eight prisoners were killed and 10 others were injured during riots that broke out on Thursday in two Ecuadorian prisons.
According to the prison authority, SNAI, four people died in a prison in Latacunga, in the province of Cotopaxi, while four others were killed in the El Inca prison, in the capital Quito. The injured are receiving medical treatment.
Authorities announced that they have identified suspects involved in the riots and are planning to transfer them to the high-security El Encuentro prison, in the province of Santa Elena.
Law enforcement is conducting operations in both prisons to restore control.
Ecuador's prisons have been repeatedly plagued by bloody clashes between rival criminal gangs, with a series of massacres recorded since 2021.
