Donald Trump's government is reportedly backing Viktor Orban for the role of UN Secretary-General, against the backdrop of Antonio Guterres' departure.
According to a report by the American media outlet "Wall Street Journal:", the US has encouraged the former Hungarian Prime Minister to participate in the race, even "throwing" the idea first.
According to the American media outlet, Russia and China are believed to be supportive, based on previous talks with Washington, and the plan would be for Mr. Orban to be their joint candidate. As officials from the US and a second (unnamed) country told us, when the US, Russia and China want the same thing on the UN Security Council, they usually get it.
The State Department official counted eight Security Council votes in Mr. Orban's favor, and roughly 10 of the council's 15 members. Would that prevent Britain and France from having a majority? Both are usually wary of using the veto.
