Bill Gates warns of 20 years of disruption from artificial intelligence

Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence could cause two decades of economic and social upheaval, disrupting jobs and lives even if the technology is managed successfully.

In an interview, the Microsoft co-founder said the shift to an economy driven by artificial intelligence would create winners and losers, potentially reshaping employment and raising questions about the roles of humans in society.

"My big concern is this 20-year transition period, where there will be winners and losers and a lot of disruption," said Gates, 70, adding that society will have to weather the turmoil before potentially entering an era of abundance.

He described the timeline as an estimate rather than a firm prediction, acknowledging that the transition could be shorter or longer depending on technological advances and decisions regarding the slowdown in development.

Gates said advances in artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics could eventually allow machines to perform much of the physical labor performed by humans, including building houses, growing food and even performing surgical procedures.

While advances can reduce shortages of goods and services, he suggested that societies can intentionally reserve certain activities for people, including childcare, food preparation, arts and sports.

The billionaire philanthropist also highlighted the potential benefits of artificial intelligence in healthcare and agriculture, but warned that governments and society are not sufficiently prepared for its rapid development.

He called for stronger government oversight and technical safeguards against cyberattacks and biological threats, arguing that artificial intelligence companies cannot be solely responsible for managing the risks.

Gates also warned that even under the most favorable circumstances, the development of artificial intelligence could bring about one of the most turbulent periods in human history.

"I hate to be the bearer of disturbing news about this, but it's even worse not to tell people this is coming. We as humans have choices to make about how we shape it," he said.

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.
