From his Durrës detention cell, Erjon Veliaj appeared to be elated over Vučić's defeat and the victory of the students in Belgrade. An elation that is not so much for the Serbian people, but for the parallels that are being removed in recent hours in Tirana, for a possible domino effect, where it is Edi Rama's turn to be ousted from power.
This is also the message of Veliaj on social networks, when he writes "Student movements and protests are not the "end of the world", but the end of "a world". The sooner we understand this as citizens and policymakers, the better we will know how to respond to the needs and expectations of this generation".
Such a sentence in the Socialist Party, said in these days of "war" sounds like heresy. Many in the parliamentary group would have problems if they were to articulate it out loud. But for Erion Veliaj, who is locked in a cell with 13 charges on his shoulders, one more problem and one less, no longer makes any difference. The full message of the mayor of Tirana below:
"Congratulations to the students for overthrowing the Machiavellian and populist of Belgrade! Student movements and protests are not the "end of the world", but the end of "a world". The sooner we understand this as citizens and policymakers, the better we will know how to respond to the needs and expectations of this generation. Heartfelt congratulations also to our Albanians in Serbia, who, according to the current projection, increase their representation from one to two mandates. A stronger voice for the rights of Albanians in Serbia!
