Student protests in Albania have received the support of the European Democrats, who from their congress in Athens have sent a message to Prime Minister Edi Rama, stating that they stand with young people who are seeking change and a democratic future for the country.
Through a public response, the European Democrats have praised the courage of Albanian students, emphasizing that their effort is linked to the aspiration for a democratic and European Albania.
"Greetings, Edi Rama. From our congress in Athens, the European Democrats family has a message for you: We stand with the brave young people of Albania, who are fighting for a finally democratic and European Albania. Thank you to MP Marjana Koçeku for joining us!", their message reads.
Independent MP Marjana Koçeku also participated in the congress, speaking about the student protests in Albania and the symbolism of the movement known as the "Flamingo Revolution".
During her speech, Koçeku emphasized that for Albanians, Europe does not represent only a geographical or economic destination, but above all the values of democracy, transparency and accountability.
She stated that the flamingo has become a symbol of civic resistance and democratic awakening, while raising accusations of the use of violence against protesting students by police forces.
"For Albanians, Europe has never been just a dot on the map or just an economic opportunity. It has represented something much more sacred and important to our nation and people: the European values of democracy, transparency and accountability."
But the flamingo quickly became a symbol that represented much more than just nature. It became a symbol of resistance, civic courage, and democratic awakening for our country.
"I have personally visited hospitals, where, due to the severe violence exerted against protesting students by plainclothes police, all means are being used to prevent students from protesting and demanding their democratic rights," Koçeku declared.
The message from Athens comes at a time when student protests have been continuing for days in Tirana, while the main demand of the demonstrators remains the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
