Eight Albanian parties from Presheva, Bujanovac and Medveđa competed with the joint list "Albanian Coalition" in the early parliamentary elections held this Sunday, October 25, in Serbia, with the aim of increasing their representation in the Assembly.
After the polls closed, the leader of this list, Shaip Kamberi, said that the Albanian parties that competed in the elections in Serbia are aiming for two mandates.
In a statement to the Kosovo public broadcaster, Kamberi said that the passivation of addresses has contributed to the loss of this list's opportunity to win a third term.
He said that if the turnout in the elections is up to 70 percent, the Albanian Coalition is likely to win the second seat in the Serbian Parliament.
After years of divisions and rivalries, Albanian parties have united with the mediation of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti. They aim to win three seats in the Serbian Parliament, where the Albanian community had only one MP in the previous composition.
On the eve of the elections, Kurti and the President of Kosovo, Justina Shiroka Pula, called on Albanians from these municipalities who live in Kosovo and have the right to vote to go to their homeland to vote.
In the message published on October 24, Kurti expressly requested support for the "Albanian Coalition", which holds number 17 on the ballot.
"Discrimination, exclusion and oppression require a determined democratic response. With solidarity. With persistence. With participation," he said.
Kurti added that the Albanians of Presheva, Bujanovac and Medvedja have the right to build their lives in their homeland, with equal opportunities.
Shiroka Pula, in her call on October 24, emphasized the importance of participation in strengthening the political representation of Albanians.
"Unity is the key to stronger political representation. Therefore, together on the list and together in voting. For more Albanian deputies in the Parliament of Serbia," she said.
According to the 2022 census, more than 60,000 Albanians live in Serbia.
From divisions to a joint list
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, published on October 1, Visar Memeti, leader of the Alternative for Change, said that the agreement to merge the parties was reached at the second meeting, thanks to Kurti's mediation.
"In 2020 we had three MPs, then we split and the result was one MP. Our goal now is to win three MPs again; this way our strength in the Serbian Parliament will be much greater," Memeti said.
But Belgzim Kamberi, from the Musine Kokalari Institute for Social Policy in Pristina, told REL that greater parliamentary representation is not enough in itself.
"The true value of this representation will be measured, first and foremost, by the impact on the economic development and well-being of the citizens of Preševo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, representation in institutions, the advancement of individual and collective rights and the return of the problems of this area to the political agenda," he said.
According to him, the priority for Albanian MPs should be concrete results in employment, education, the use of the Albanian language, the implementation of existing agreements and addressing the issue of the passivation of addresses. /Taken from Radio Free Europe
