Former President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has made his first statement after the closing of polling stations for the extraordinary parliamentary elections, emphasizing that citizens have decided the direction the country will take in the coming years.
In a statement to the media, Vučić stated that Serbia is facing an important choice, between the future and a return to the past, which he linked to the period of privatizations and economic difficulties.
"Serbia chooses which direction it will go, whether it will move towards the future or towards the past, in a time of predatory privatizations, the economic destruction of the country and the political humiliation of the nation and the entire state. We will see how the people will decide," Vučić said.
He emphasized that the decision of the citizens must be respected, regardless of the result of the vote.
"The will of the people is the will of God. Vox populi, vox Dei," he declared.
Asked by journalists what message he had for citizens after the closing of polling stations, Vučić called on them to wait for the announcement of preliminary results.
He announced that the first data is expected to be published around 11:30 p.m.
"We will have that assessment and preliminary results sometime around eleven thirty in the evening. As always, we will give accurate results, up to 0.1 percent. There is no big philosophy," said the Serbian president.
Responding to questions from foreign media, Vučić stated that he expects a high turnout in the elections and that Serbian citizens will freely express their democratic will.
The extraordinary parliamentary elections in Serbia took place this Sunday, October 25, with polling stations closing at 8:00 PM.
According to data from the Republican Electoral Commission, the turnout as of 6:00 p.m. reached 64.89 percent. In these elections, citizens voted to elect 250 deputies to the new Parliament of Serbia, while 18 electoral lists participated in the race. /BW
