Beatings, attacks and threats/ REUTERS: The gloom of Vučić's Serbia on

Serbian activist Marko Marjanovic was returning from a supermarket in Belgrade when masked officers put him in a car and took him to the basement of a police station where he was held in solitary confinement for two days under bright lights.

Marjanovic, a well-known social media analyst and vocal opponent of Serbia's leader, Aleksandar Vučić, said he was horrified and that it was not the first time. Earlier, in August 2025, police had beaten Marjanovic during anti-government protests, part of what he and his lawyer describe as a campaign to silence him.

As former President Vučić seeks to extend his 12-year rule by running for prime minister in the October 25 elections, interviews with activists, student protesters and opposition politicians paint an increasingly authoritarian picture of the Balkan country where critics are regularly threatened, press freedoms are diminishing and corruption is on the rise.

"So much corruption... so much destruction of everything that is needed and that should have value. Someone must be held accountable," said Marjanovic, who has experienced lengthy social media bans for his posts, one of which included the phone number of acting President Ana Brnabic, who was the speaker of parliament at the time.

Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) have repeatedly denied accusations of repression and corruption. His office and the Interior Ministry did not respond to requests for comment for this story.

Press freedom at lowest level as protests increase

Vučić is facing his biggest political challenge since coming to power. The student-led protest movement, which flourished after a train station tent collapse in Novi Sad that killed 16 people in 2024, is now fielding 250 of its own candidates in Sunday's election. A poll this week put the students on a par with the SNS.

“As long as the SNS has been in power, there has never been such good organization on that pro-democratic side of society,” said Dragan Popovic, who heads the Center for Practical Politics. “The more he (Vučić) is threatened, the more the pressure increases.”

After months in the firing line, the bond market may finally be finding its magic again.

However, Kontic is not alone. Two Serbian opposition figures were recently targeted with powerful cyber espionage tools, according to one of the men and a report released Monday by Citizen Lab.

Reuters could not determine who was responsible for the suspected infections. Israel's NSO Group, the maker of Pegasus, has said it sells only to governments.

Video captured the brutal beatings

Nowhere is the threat to security more apparent than on the streets, where protesters say police have often used force against peaceful demonstrations.

Dusan Radovic, a 26-year-old architect, was helping someone who had fallen as police attacked a crowd of protesters in the town of Valjevo in August last year when officers in riot gear began hitting him with batons.

"10 of them surrounded me, kicked me, spat on me, at one point one stepped on my head. They lifted me up and then continued to hit me so I fell to the ground," Radovic told Reuters.

A video verified by Reuters captured the beating. It took two months before he could walk without a limp.

Radovic was among 25 people, some of them minors, who were badly beaten that night, according to an independent report by forensic specialist Dr. Djordje Alempijevic.

"The injuries are not the result of isolated incidents or necessary police self-defense, but demonstrate a clear, organized, and systematic pattern of police brutality and punitive torture," the report said.

The Interior Ministry did not respond to a question about the Valjevo protest and the report.

“My first reaction was anger, anger at those people capable of such cruelty,” Radovic told Reuters. “But then I realized that I cannot retreat from this. I have to fight for justice and truth.” ©Albanian adaptation LAPSI.al

How Rama is leading the country towards civil strife

Insisting on violence, on arming civilians, on paying police officers as if they were mercenaries, alone does not produce peace. Edi Rama's fear of where he will end up when he is no longer prime minister does not have to become Albania's nightmare.

Andi Bushati: Why stones and Molotov cocktails became inevitable

This youth revolt has had a great merit. It made known to the general public the most criminal side of this regime that had until now been preserved in the most secretive recesses. If the extremely peaceful revolution of the flamingos showed us that this government was no longer popular, its radical epilogue, with stones and Molotov cocktails, is serving to bring to light that the autocrat is capable of using any means to stay in power.
