The Serious Crimes Court in Rome has sentenced Mark Antony Samson to life in prison. On March 25, 2025, he stabbed 22-year-old Albanian student Ilaria Sula to death and then threw her body into a bag and off a cliff. The defendant, who admitted the crime, was charged with intentional murder, with aggravating circumstances including premeditation, ulterior motives, a romantic relationship with the victim and concealment of the body.
The incident took place in Samson's apartment on Via Homs, in Rome. After the attack, he disappeared the body with the help of his mother, who reached a plea deal with a two-year sentence for the charge of complicity in concealing the body. The body was found there on April 2, after a week-long search.
"Justice was served, but the real life sentence is the one my wife and I are living. He is still breathing. My daughter is no longer breathing. This is an important moment for the justice system. I have always had faith in the justice system and I was not left alone to face this," declared Flamur Sula, Ilaria's father, after the verdict was announced.
"This was not a crime committed on the spur of the moment," and "Samson has never shown remorse for his actions, continuing to believe that Ilaria Sula deserved that fate," prosecutor Maria Perna declared in the courtroom during the rebuttal phase.
"I can still picture the body in the ditch and the condition it was in. Samson never told the truth; he continued to lie to avoid admitting that the crime was premeditated," the prosecutor's representative added.
On May 19, the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office requested life imprisonment for Samson. During their closing arguments, prosecutors stated that the murder of Ilaria Sula "was planned and carried out in cold blood."
"Samson lured Ilaria into a trap in his house. Ilaria was stunned by the punches and then stabbed," explained deputy prosecutor Giuseppe Cascini, adding that the young man "showed no mercy while punching her and then stabbing her. He showed no mercy when he threw her away like she was garbage. He showed no mercy towards Ilaria, insulting and belittling her even after he had killed her. He showed no mercy when, after the murder, he went to eat a "piadina". According to prosecutor Maria Perna, Samson is an individual "accustomed to lying, manipulative and hypocritical. He had put Sula in an affair and exercised control over her life", while the murder was "a massacre".
In the high-security courtroom in Rebibbia, Samson's defense lawyers presented their arguments. They claimed that the aggravating circumstances highlighted by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, specifically premeditation, do not apply.
"Samson is undoubtedly guilty and must be held accountable," Foti declared, "but his crime was committed in the spur of the moment as a result of a sudden and explosive anger, within a mind that was already clouded by intoxication."
Addressing the court, the lawyer added: "The search for truth and justice must be balanced with the possibility of social rehabilitation – an opportunity that should not be denied to anyone." The defense also asked the court to take into account general mitigating circumstances, citing "his age, lack of criminal records, as well as the fact that he tried to provide information that helped reconstruct the details of this tragic event." ©LAPSI.al
